Children’s Issues
School days are said to be the happiest days of your life. That certainly isn’t the case for many young people who have experienced misery at the hands of other children and even teachers. This short case study fully represents the way many students are traumatised by classroom events, the teacher and the whole school system in this case being the unwitting source of the trauma.

Kath is a first year student of business management. She feels strangely worked up and panicky about having to deliver a talk to her fellow students and says she ‘ought’ to be able to conquer her fears but can’t do anything about it.
In the EFT world we look for events which may have triggered such feelings. So I asked Kath if she had ever had to give a talk in front of her class at school. She nodded and said she was terrified by the whole experience. It wasn’t just the teacher trying to encourage her by saying, ‘But you CAN do it’ and later standing in front of the class, it was the fear she felt right from when the announcement was made about the talk. She lived in fear and trembling for 2-3 weeks and it built up to a horrendous peak of sleepless terror the night before the talk. Adding to the problem, she also imagined her classmates laughing at her awkwardness and inability to speak properly.

On the day of the talk she wished the ground would swallow her up and she didn’t know how she managed to get through with the ordeal. But she did and now she had to do the same again at university and she was beginning to feel the strain.
We tapped for her feelings beginning with the announcement of the school talk, working through the panic of the night before and then the talk itself. Suddenly she felt as though a huge weight was removed from her shoulders and she smiled. In addition she felt fine about giving the talk at uni - in fact she felt a positive thrill of anticipation at the thought of it. The whole session took only 15 minutes and she left brimming with confidence.
